One person is dead and 3 children are missing after a volcano eruption in Guatemala. Volcano Pacaya started spewing lava and rocks on Thursday afternoon, covering the Guatemalan capital with ash. 1,600 people have been evacuated from the area. The city's international airport has been shut down and the Guatemalan president has declared a state of emergency.

The death toll from a violent storm that hit the southern U.S. has risen to 28, as receding waters reveal more bodies. The flash-flood caught Nashville, Tennessee off-guard, drowning the city's down-town in the muddy waters of the swollen Cumberland river. Thousands were forced to flee their homes. Rescuers used boats and jet-skis to save those trapped by the flooding.

Beijing, China -- Massive mudslides in northwestern China have killed 337 people, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported Monday.

An additional 1,148 people are missing, the news agency said, citing the civil affairs department in Gansu Province.

Authorities report 76 people have been injured and about 45,000 have been evacuated from Zhouqu County in the country's northwest, according to a statement from the provincial civil affairs department.

The landslides occurred early Sunday morning after heavy rains started pummeling the area Saturday, authorities said. On Sunday afternoon, Premier Wen Jiabao and other government officials arrived at the mountainous region to survey the damage, according to Xinhua.

Pakistan devastated after worst floods in history

The massive floods which are raging through north-western Pakistan have now killed at least one-thousand-one-hundred people. Emergency workers are struggling to save thousands of others who're still trapped. The situation's being made worse by water-borne disease, with some of those in rescue camps suffering with fever and skin problems. The UN estimates that about one-and-a-half million people are affected by the country's worst monsoon rains in memory.

The Darvaza area is rich in natural gas. While drilling in 1971 geologists accidentally found an underground cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of about 50-100 meters. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided to burn the gas. Geologists had hoped the fire would go out in a few days but it has been burning ever since. Locals have named the cavern The Door to Hell. Next to capturing the gas, flaring is safer and friendlier to the environment than releasing the methane into the atmosphere as methane is a relatively potent greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential of 72 (averaged over 20 years) or 25 (averaged over 100 years).
