6.9 Earthquake Rocks China

April 14th 2010
Nearly 600 people are dead and that number is expected to rise in the wake of a 6.9 earthquake which struck the mountainous Yushu region of China's Qinghai Province. Lucy Craft reports from Tokyo.

Spectacular tornado footage taken 5/8/08 in Western Kansas

Wichita storm chaser Jim Reed and his intern Robin Lorenson followed Thursday's Greeley County tornado for 20 minutes.

The tornado dropped out of the sky right in front of Reed and soon began heading in his direction. As Reed and Lorenson backed down a dirt road, the tornado followed. Suddenly, the tornado stopped.

That's when Reed got out of the car and ran directly toward it.

Baldwin Hills Dam Disaster 1963

On December 14th 1963 in the hills about Los Angeles, the Baldwin Hills Reservoir suddenly cracked and eventually failed flooding the neighborhood below. Several people died and many homes were destroyed. Those of us who were there were already shaken by the death of John Kennedy only three weeks earlier. The reservoir's floodwaters literally washed in the turbulent times that lay ahead.

Tornadoes - Noble County, OK

On the afternoon of May 24, 2008 an isolated supercell thunderstorm developed over north-central Oklahoma, to the northwest of Oklahoma City, and quickly became tornadic as it moved slowly east-northeastward. The cyclic cell became a prolific tornado producer and, over a four hour period, generated no less than 15 individual tornadoes... possibly more.

VIOLENT Oklahoma City Hailstorm

A violent storm moved through metropolitan Oklahoma City, OK on Sunday, May 16, 2010. The storm produced hail larger than the size of softballs. The hail lasted for over 5 minutes solid and the hail was tennis ball to baseball size.

Giant ice block baffles scientists

The chunk of ice that broke off the glacier on Thursday is headed for the Nares Strait, the shipping waterway between Greenland and Canada.
It is the biggest event in the Arctic in nearly half a century.
Scientists are scrambling to understand the implications of a giant piece of ice breaking off a glacier bordering Greenland.

Deadly China landslide claims hundreds of lives

The death toll from landslides in China, which has been experiencing extreme weather in recent weeks, has doubled overnight.

Chinese officials say at least 702 people were killed after a mass of mud and rock rushed through a town in remote Gansu province at the weekend.
More than 1,000 people are still missing, as thousands of soldiers and volunteers continue to dig round-the-clock to try to find survivors.
