Japan was struck by a magnitude-8.8 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, triggering a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicenter. (March 10)

Los Angeles Earthquake
An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter Scale shook Los Angeles for 40 seconds. The death toll was low as it took place in the early hours of the morning when people were asleep but serious damage was sustained by buildings and elevated freeways.
